!5th and 16th greens at Barbados Golf Club

9 January 2021

We woke up early and as a golfer, who had been deprived of golf for some weeks, it was time to explore one of the local courses. The nearest is Barbados Golf Club, a Ron Kirby designed course in the south of the island.

We arrived early, signed in and had a beer while waiting for our early afternoon tee time. We took a golf cart as the course was unfamiliar to us. The fairways appeared in good condition and the greens were slick; a little too quick for me as this stage. I played the front nine well but things slipped after that but it was great to be out playing golf! With the sun descending the final holes and mature trees and green fairways were bathed in a warm light and a par three over some water looked like a signature hole.

Afterwards we headed off for a Mexican dinner at a venue we had spotted the previous day by the beach.

After dinner, and several Margaritas, the road home was somewhat exciting! Google Maps took us through the middle of a sugar cane plantation. With cane leaves brushing the car on both sides, sizeable rocks jutting out of the track and deep puddles of rain water I wondered where we would end up. However, the Suzuki Swift took it in its stride and, luckily, we eventually emerged onto a tarmac road. I laughed afterwards though at the time it was a little tense!
